Urban Waste Management services disrupted by heavy rainfall/flooding
08 April 2025
The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate advises residents that, due to flooding and heavy rainfall, we are expecting delays in the refuse collection service. Various drop-off sites have also been affected.
The City of Cape Town Urban Waste Management Directorate advises residents that heavy rain and localised flooding is hampering service delivery throughout the city.
With regard to servicing of 240l wheelie bins, flooding is hampering the movement of compactors in certain cases, while heavy rain creates additional risks for collections workers, slowing their progress. Rainfall also increases the incidence of vehicle breakdowns.
Residents who are affected by delays should please take their bin back inside overnight if it has not been collected by 21:00, and take it out again each day until it has been serviced. The City will work to clear any backlog that has developed before the next scheduled collection day.
Flooding has also affected access to various drop-off facilities throughout the metro including:
• Woodstock
• De Grendel
• Kensington
These sites are operational, but access may be a challenge for smaller vehicles.
In addition, the Killarney and Tygerdal drop-offs greens chipping facilities have been flooded and these sites are unable to accept garden waste at present.
Residents are requested to make use of alternative sites or plan their drop-off visit for another day if possible.
The City regrets any inconvenience caused, and requests that residents do not resort to dumping as a result of delays.
Reminder:
• Recycling and composting can help reduce the nuisance associated with refuse collection delays. See helpful information on how to compost and recycle on the City’s website.
